ChatGPT Ads does not work like Google or Meta

There are no keywords to bid on

Placement is decided by the context of the live conversation, not by a keyword list you build. Your product catalogue and your copy are the targets. Everything you know about match types, negative keywords and search terms reports does not transfer.

There are no audiences to import

No demographic sculpting, no custom audiences, no lookalikes, no retargeting pools. OpenAI uses conversation context only and takes no personal data for targeting. You get aggregate impressions and clicks back, nothing user-level.

Only two tiers ever see an ad

Ads reach logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education stay ad-free, and users identified or predicted to be under 18 are excluded. If your buyer is an enterprise decision-maker on a Business seat, they will never see your ad. That changes who this channel is for.

What we run in ChatGPT Ads Manager

  • Ads Manager setup: account, billing, brand safety settings and the first campaign structure

  • Category eligibility check: restricted categories are reviewed before we quote, not after you have committed budget

  • Product feed build: the catalogue is the targeting, so feed quality decides delivery. Titles, attributes, imagery, availability and price accuracy

  • Landing page and CRO: conversation-referred traffic arrives with different expectations to search traffic. Pages need to answer the question the conversation started

  • Measurement build: attribution designed before the first campaign goes live

  • Channel allocation: what should move from Google and Meta into ChatGPT Ads, and what should not

Measuring ChatGPT Ads is the hard part

OpenAI returns aggregate impressions and clicks. No conversation data, no user-level signal, no view-through. The platform cannot tell you what a sale was worth, and it will not close the loop for you.

So the measurement has to be built on your side: strict UTM discipline at the destination, server-side conversion events, and a geographic or time-based holdout so you can read incremental lift rather than last-click. Without that you are buying impressions on trust. We build this before we spend, not after.

ChatGPT Ads in India

India is OpenAI’s second-largest ChatGPT market, with more than 100 million weekly users as of February 2026. Ads went live for Free and Go users on 27 August 2026, and self-serve access opens on 4 September with daily budgets from ₹725, low enough that a small brand can test properly rather than commit a quarter’s budget. WPP and Omnicom are OpenAI’s first agency partners in the market, with more than 50 brands expected live in launch week.

What that means for an Indian advertiser: the auction is thin right now. Thin auctions do not stay thin.

Who ChatGPT Ads works for

  • D2C and ecommerce brands with a product catalogue already running on Google Shopping or Meta

  • Brands whose buyers research and compare before deciding, which is exactly the conversation ChatGPT ads sit inside

  • Teams already spending on paid search who want a genuine test budget, not a pilot nobody measures

We check your category before we quote

OpenAI excludes some advertiser categories outright and treats others as restricted, and the policy has already changed once since launch. Politics and mental health remain excluded. Health, finance and legal are handled as restricted rather than banned, and eligibility can differ by market. We check your category against OpenAI’s current ad policies before we quote, so you find out up front rather than after a rejection.

FAQ

Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers

Here’s what advertisers usually want to know before running ChatGPT Ads.

What are ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements that appear below ChatGPT responses when they are relevant to the conversation. They are clearly labelled and visually separated from the answer. OpenAI began showing them in February 2026 and opened a self-serve Ads Manager in May 2026.

Can I advertise on ChatGPT in India yet?

Yes. Ads went live for Indian Free and Go users on 27 August 2026, and the self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager opens to Indian advertisers on 4 September 2026 with daily budgets starting at ₹725. Before that date, access ran through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team and agency partners.

How much does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT?

There is no published rate card. In India the self-serve minimum is ₹725 a day, and US advertisers set their own daily budget in Ads Manager. Beyond the minimum, cost depends on how contested the conversation context is. Because the auction is still thin in most categories, early advertisers are buying at prices that are unlikely to hold once volume arrives.

How is ChatGPT Ads targeting different from Google Ads?

There are no keywords and no audience imports. Placement is decided by the context of the live conversation, and OpenAI uses no personal data for targeting. Your product feed and your copy do the work that a keyword list and audience layer would do on Google or Meta.

Which ad formats can I run?

Self-serve launched with product feed campaigns and a multi-product carousel format. A product feed campaign takes a structured catalogue and surfaces relevant items when a conversation signals purchase intent.

Who actually sees ChatGPT Ads?

Logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers see no advertising, and users identified or predicted to be under 18 are excluded.

Can my category advertise on ChatGPT?

Many can, though not all, and the rules have already shifted once since launch. Politics and mental health sit outside the platform. Health, finance and legal are treated as restricted, which means additional review rather than an automatic no, and what is permitted can vary from one market to the next. Approved ads are also kept away from conversations about someone's medical condition or personal finances. OpenAI publishes the current list in its ad policies, and we verify against it before proposing a campaign.

Can I measure conversions from ChatGPT Ads?

Not from the platform alone. OpenAI returns aggregate impressions and clicks with no user-level data, so attribution has to be built on your side: UTM discipline, server-side conversion events and a holdout to read incremental lift. We build that before spending.

Should I move budget out of Google or Meta to fund this?

Not at first. Treat ChatGPT Ads as an additive test with a defined budget and a measurement plan, and let the incremental read decide whether it earns a permanent allocation. Moving budget out of a channel that is working, to fund one you cannot yet measure, is how tests get killed early.
