ChatGPT SEO: The Practical Guide
Published
· Updated

ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your pages cited and your brand recommended in ChatGPT answers. Start by allowing OAI-SearchBot, because OpenAI says sites that block it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. Then rank well in traditional search, write pages that answer questions directly, earn mentions on the third-party sites ChatGPT cites most, and track results through utm_source=chatgpt.com in your analytics.
Why ChatGPT SEO matters
OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active users for ChatGPT in February 2026, and spoke of 1.2 billion weekly users across its platform at DevDay in September 2026. Web search has been open to everyone, including people who are not signed in, since February 2025.
The traffic is small but moving fast. SE Ranking's study of 101,574 websites found the worldwide share of referral traffic from ChatGPT to websites rose from 0.23% in April 2026 to 0.32% in May 2026. Similarweb recorded a 157.7% week-on-week jump in ChatGPT referrals after a product update on 7 May 2026, with around 60% of those referrals now landing on brand homepages.
The bigger value is upstream of the click. When a buyer asks ChatGPT which tool, agency, or product to choose, the brands in that answer make the shortlist. The ones left out often never get considered.
How ChatGPT search finds and cites sources
ChatGPT does not answer every prompt from its training data. When a question benefits from current information, it searches the web.
OpenAI's help documentation says ChatGPT search "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" and sends them to search providers. At launch on 31 October 2024, OpenAI said ChatGPT search "leverages third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners." Its help article for Enterprise and Edu customers names Bing as one of those providers.
The picture is more complicated than "ChatGPT uses Bing," though. The studies disagree, partly because they were run at different times on different query sets.
Study | Date | Finding |
|---|---|---|
Seer Interactive | February 2025 | 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top 20 results, against 56% for Google |
Ahrefs | August 2025 | Only 8% of ChatGPT citations ranked in Google's top 10 for the same long-tail prompt, and 8.1% in Bing's top 10 |
Ahrefs | September 2025 | On head terms, ChatGPT citations overlapped Google's top 10 at 10% by URL, but 31.8% by domain |
Kevin Indig, reported by Search Engine Land | March 2026 | Pages ranking #1 in Google were cited 43.2% of the time, 3.5 times more often than pages ranking beyond the top 20 |
RESONEO, reported by Search Engine Land | August 2026 | Analysis suggesting OpenAI now runs its own web index rather than relying on Bing for it |
The practical reading: strong rankings in both Google and Bing raise your odds, but ChatGPT also pulls from a wider set of pages, especially for longer, more specific prompts. Like Google's AI features, it rewrites one prompt into one or more searches, so ranking for the related questions around a topic may matter too.
Which sources ChatGPT cites most
Third-party sites carry a lot of weight. Profound analyzed around 730,000 US ChatGPT conversations from late 2025 and found Wikipedia appeared in 18% of conversations with citations and Reddit in 13%. Ahrefs' monthly tracker, using a different method, put Reddit at 16.8% and Wikipedia at 7.0% of citations among top sources in September 2026.
Concentration is high within topics. Kevin Indig's analysis found roughly 30 domains capture 67% of citations within a topic. If you are not one of those domains, you want to be mentioned on them.
How to do ChatGPT SEO: 8 steps
1. Allow OAI-SearchBot
This is the one non-negotiable step. OpenAI's crawler documentation states: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." Check your robots.txt, and check your CDN and firewall rules too, since bot protection often blocks it silently. OpenAI notes robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply to search.
2. Decide separately on GPTBot

OpenAI runs three main agents, and each is controlled independently.
Crawler | What it does | What blocking it means |
|---|---|---|
OAI-SearchBot | Finds and indexes pages for ChatGPT search | Your pages will not appear in ChatGPT search answers |
GPTBot | Collects content for training OpenAI's models | Your content should not be used for training. Search is unaffected |
ChatGPT-User | Visits pages when a user asks ChatGPT to | OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply, because the user starts the visit |
You can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot if you want search visibility without contributing training data. Our robots.txt generator handles these directives. If you want a page kept out of ChatGPT search, OpenAI notes its crawler must be allowed to fetch the page to read a noindex tag.
3. Get indexed and ranking in Bing and Google
Set up Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Use IndexNow, which shares submitted URLs with all participating search engines, so updates get picked up quickly. Keep investing in Google rankings, given the correlation between a #1 Google ranking and ChatGPT citations.
4. Write pages that answer the question directly
Put the direct answer in the first lines of each section, then support it. Use clear headings, tables for comparisons, and specific figures with their sources and dates. The goal is a passage that can be lifted out and still make sense on its own. Our guide to LLM SEO covers how retrieval systems pick passages.
5. Earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT trusts
Given how often Reddit, Wikipedia, review sites, and editorial "best of" lists appear in citations, earned media is a ChatGPT SEO channel. Take part genuinely in relevant communities, keep review profiles current, and pitch data-led stories to the publications that show up when you test your category prompts.
6. List your products if you sell online
OpenAI says product results in ChatGPT "are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads." Shopify merchants are included through Shopify Catalog, and OpenAI says no additional work is required from them. Other merchants can apply for a direct product feed. OpenAI's feed specification lists nine required fields, including title, description, brand, availability, and price. Keep those current, because stale prices or stock lose trust fast.
7. Keep paid and organic separate in your head
ChatGPT ads are real now. OpenAI began testing ads in the US on 9 February 2026 and, by August 2026, had launched them in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. OpenAI states that "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you," and says Instant Checkout items are not preferred in product results. Buying ads will not lift your organic visibility.
8. Track it
Measure what ChatGPT is already sending you, then test what it says. Both are covered in the next section.
How to measure ChatGPT SEO
utm_source=chatgpt.com. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds this parameter to referral links. Filter for it in your analytics.
GA4's AI Assistant channel. Google Analytics added a default AI Assistant channel in May 2026 that groups traffic from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, and Grok.
Landing pages. Check which pages ChatGPT sends people to. Given Similarweb's finding on homepage referrals, expect your homepage to feature heavily.
Prompt testing. Run a fixed set of buyer prompts in ChatGPT, several times each, and record whether you are mentioned or cited. Our guide on how to check if AI models cite your brand has the full method, and the AI visibility checker gives a quick baseline.
Note that Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report covers Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, not ChatGPT.
Using ChatGPT for SEO work
Many people searching "ChatGPT SEO" want the other meaning: using ChatGPT as an SEO assistant. It is useful for drafting meta descriptions, clustering keyword lists, outlining content, writing schema markup, and summarizing competitor pages. Two rules keep it safe. Check every fact it gives you against a primary source, and edit drafts so they carry your own expertise and data. Content that only repeats common knowledge is exactly what neither Google nor ChatGPT has a reason to cite.
Common mistakes
Blocking OAI-SearchBot by accident. CDN bot protection is the usual culprit. Check your logs.
Blocking GPTBot and assuming you have opted out of search. They are separate. Blocking GPTBot does not affect ChatGPT search.
Ignoring Bing. OpenAI names Bing as a search provider, Seer Interactive found strong overlap with Bing results, and Bing Webmaster Tools takes minutes to set up.
Writing only about yourself. McKinsey found brand-owned sites make up only 5 to 10% of the sources AI search references. Third-party mentions do much of the work.
Expecting ads to help organic answers. OpenAI says they do not.
Testing once, logged in. Answers vary by run and by personalization. Use repeated runs in a clean session.
