Google AI Overviews Explained

Zaprev cover: Google AI Overviews Explained, what they are, how they work, how they differ from AI Mode, and what you can control.

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results, with links to the pages they drew from. A Gemini model customized for Search writes them, grounded in Google's ranking systems rather than only in training data. Over 2.5 billion people use them every month. Users cannot switch them off, and site owners can only limit them with snippet controls.

What Google AI Overviews are

An AI Overview is a short, generated answer placed above the regular results for queries where Google's systems decide a summary will help. It pulls together information from multiple web pages and shows links to those pages alongside the text.

Google's Help Center describes them as "a core Google Search feature, like knowledge panels." That framing matters, because it is the reason they cannot be turned off (more on that below).

The scale is hard to overstate. Sundar Pichai said at Google I/O on 19 May 2026 that "AI Overviews now has over 2.5 billion monthly active users." By May 2025, Google had made them available in more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages.

The rough launch is worth remembering. In May 2024, AI Overviews went viral for answers such as suggesting glue to keep cheese on pizza. In its response, Google said the problems affected a small share of queries, restricted AI Overviews for nonsensical queries, and said it aims not to show them for hard news topics. Google's own help page still says "AI Overviews can and will make mistakes."

How AI Overviews work

Here is the process in plain terms, based on Google's documentation.

1. Google decides whether a summary adds value. AI Overviews are designed for queries where they can add additional benefits beyond the regular results. Many searches still show none.

2. The query may be expanded. For more complex questions, Google uses a technique it calls query fan-out: it runs several related searches across subtopics and data sources at the same time, then combines what it finds.

3. A Gemini model writes the answer from ranked pages. Google described the model at launch as "a new Gemini model customized for Google Search," and has since made Gemini 3 the default. Crucially, Google said in 2024 that AI Overviews are "not simply generating an output based on training data." They are built on top of Google's core ranking and quality systems.

4. Links are attached to the answer. Supporting links appear in-line in the text, in a link panel on desktop, and as site icons on mobile. Because of fan-out, a cited page may not rank for the original query at all. It may rank for one of the sub-searches instead.

5. Users can continue the conversation. Since early 2026, follow-up questions from an AI Overview carry on in AI Mode.

Ads can also appear. Google Ads Help states that ads are eligible to show above, below, or within AI Overviews, with in-overview ads available in English in a set of countries including the US.

AI Overviews vs AI Mode

These two are often confused, and Google has been bringing them closer together. In its Q2 2026 earnings remarks, Google said it had "brought together AI Overviews and AI Mode into one seamless Search experience." They still serve different jobs.

For site owners, there is one practical difference to remember. Ahrefs found in a 2025 study that AI Mode and AI Overviews cited the same URLs only 13.7% of the time. Visibility in one does not guarantee visibility in the other.

How often do AI Overviews appear?

It depends on who is measuring and when. Each study below uses a different sample.

  • Pew Research Center found that 18% of the Google searches in its March 2025 study produced an AI summary.

  • Semrush, tracking more than 10 million keywords, found AI Overviews appeared for 6.49% of queries in January 2025, peaked at 24.61% in July, and settled at 15.69% in November 2025.

  • Conductor found AI Overviews on 25.11% of the 21.9 million Google searches it analyzed between May and September 2025.

The mix is also shifting. Semrush found the share of AI Overview queries that were informational fell from 91.3% to 57.1% during 2025, and Google said in July 2026 that it had "expanded AI Overviews to more commercial queries."

What AI Overviews mean for clicks

The evidence points in two directions, and both are worth knowing.

Source

Finding

Pew Research Center (July 2025)

Users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary

Ahrefs (February 2026)

An AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page, using December 2025 data

Seer Interactive (November 2025)

Organic CTR fell on queries with AI Overviews, but pages cited in the AI Overview earned 35% more organic clicks

Google

Says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are "higher quality"

The pattern is consistent: fewer clicks overall when an AI Overview appears, with the cited pages faring better than the ones left out. Our guide on how to rank in AI Overviews covers how to be one of the cited pages.

Can you turn off AI Overviews?

As a searcher: not fully. Google's Help Center says "Features cannot be turned off." There are two partial workarounds:

  • The Web filter. Choosing "Web" under the search bar shows text links only, without AI Overviews.

  • Search Labs. The "AI in Search" toggle in Labs only affects experimental features, not AI Overviews themselves.

You can also give feedback on any AI Overview with the thumbs up or down buttons.

As a site owner: only with trade-offs. Google gives four controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex. Google's robots meta tag documentation confirms that nosnippet also prevents content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. The catch is that these controls also limit your regular search snippets, or, with noindex, remove the page from Search entirely.

Blocking Google-Extended does not help here. Google states that Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search."

That gap, with no way to opt out of AI Overviews while keeping normal snippets, is at the center of the publisher disputes. Penske Media sued Google in September 2025, and the European Commission opened a formal antitrust investigation in December 2025 that covers AI Overviews and AI Mode.

What site owners should know

  • Eligibility is simple. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Google says there are "no additional requirements" and no special optimizations needed.

  • No special files or markup. Google says you do not need special schema, AI text files, or llms.txt. Our llms.txt guide explains why.

  • Traffic is not split out in Search Console. AI Overview clicks are counted in the Performance report under the Web search type. Google's help documentation says an AI Overview occupies a single position, and all links in it share that position.

  • Third-party checks fill the gap. To see whether your brand is cited, use the process in our guide on how to check if AI models cite your brand, or start with our free AI visibility checker.

Common misconceptions

  • "AI Overviews are just ChatGPT inside Google." They are written by a Gemini model and grounded in Google's ranking systems, not generated from training data alone.

  • "Blocking Google-Extended keeps me out of AI Overviews." It does not affect Search inclusion. Only snippet controls do.

  • "You need schema or llms.txt to appear." Google says neither is required.

  • "They show up on every search." Third-party studies put the share between roughly 11% and 25% of queries, and Semrush measured as low as 6.49% in January 2025, depending on sample and month.

  • "They are always accurate." Google itself says they can and will make mistakes.

An AI-generated summary shown at the top of some Google search results, with links to the web pages it drew from. It is written by a Gemini model customized for Search.

Do AI Overviews show ads?

Yes. Google says ads can appear above, below, or within AI Overviews, with in-overview ads available in English in a number of countries including the US.

Can I stop my website from appearing in AI Overviews?

Yes, with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, or noindex. Each also affects your regular search appearance, so use them carefully.

Where do AI Overviews get their information?
